Baseball: Defensive miscues cost Roadrunners on Saturday

Box Score DENVER - Metro State committed four errors as Fort Hays State slid past the host Roadrunners 10-6 on Saturday at Auraria Field in non-conference baseball action. The Roadrunners fell to 1-2 overall, while FHSU improved to 2-1 to close the season-opening series between the two schools.

MSU led 4-3 after two innings, chasing Tigers starter Robert VanCour after just 1.1 innings. Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) delivered an RBI single with two outs in the first inning to score Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) for a 1-0 lead after the first.

A bases-loaded hit batter gave Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) an RBI in the second. Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) tied the game at 3-3 on a fielder's choice and Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) drove in a run with a single through the left side for a 4-3 lead.

After surrendering a game-tying run in the top of the third, the Roadrunners again took a one-run lead at 5-4 on a ground out by Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) to score Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.).

But that was the final lead for the Roadrunners. The Tigers scored twice in the fourth with the aid of an error and a balk to lead 6-5. They pushed three more across for a 9-5 lead in the seventh.

Metro State scored its final run when Andrew Paust (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) reached on a one-out error in the bottom of the seventh to score Baldini.

Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) suffered the loss for MSU, allowing five earned runs in five innings. He struck out four.

Alex Hill (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh H.S.) allowed one unearned run in two innings of relief and struck out a pair of batters.

MSU is scheduled to host Nebraska-Kearney for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
