Baseball: Big hitting leads to split at Highlands

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Metro State split a baseball doubleheader at New Mexico Highlands, winning 11-7 in game one before falling 6-5 in game two. The Roadrunners are now 7-11 overall, while NMHU is 13-7.

Game One
Metro State's bats broke out for 14 hits in the seven-inning game, led by a 3-for-4 performance by Jacob Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.), and two-hit games from Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.), Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.).

Justin Arceneaux (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo H.S.) recovered from a rough first inning to earn the win, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing five runs and striking out four.

After the Roadrunners went scoreless in the top of the first, NMHU score two more runs and left the bases loaded.

MSU Denver took advantage of an error to tie the game in the third. A botched double play attempt put runners on first and second with one out and Nelson singled home Cammall and Baca brought in Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) with a ground out for the scoring.

A double by Levett and RBI singles from Cammall and Nelson highlighted a four-run fourth inning for the Roadrunners.

They added another run in the fifth after back-to-back doubles by Markie Ortivez (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) and Levett.

Arceneaux ran into trouble again in the bottom of the fifth with a 7-2 lead. He loaded the bases with one out and reliever Carlos Luzon (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Instituto Escuela) allowed all three runs to score, cutting the lead to 7-5.

But the bats came alive again for Metro State in the sixth. After Gibbons reached on an error to start the inning, Nelson crushed his first home run of the season to right field. Baca and Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) followed with a double and a triple and Schrupp capped the four-run inning by scoring on a single up the middle by Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.).

Eli Ford (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh H.S.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the win.

Game Two
Schrupp had three hits and Cammall, Nelson, Baldini and Ortivez each had two, but the Roadrunners stranded 10 runners on base in the 6-5 loss.

MSU Denver trailed 5-0 after three innings before things started offensively. Schrupp drove in Nelson with a double to right-center with one out, but was thrown out at third on the play.

Down 6-1 in the sixth, doubles by Schrupp and Ortivez, and singles from Baldini and Cammall led to a three-run inning.

Nelson and Schrupp both doubles in the seventh to score a run, but the Roadrunners left the bases loaded to end the game.

Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) took the loss and Kevin Hand (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) gave up one unearned run in three innings of relief.

The two teams will meet for a nine-inning game at noon on Sunday.
