Tennis: Men go 3-2 on weekend while women go 1-1 in tough competition for both teams

DENVER- Men's tennis went 3-2 on the weekend with two wins against regional opponents while the women split their weekend going 1-1.

Men:
The men's tennis team started their weekend of when they defeated regional foe Dallas Baptist 8-1 on Thursday morning before falling to NAIA foe Bethany (Kan.) 9-0.  Against Dallas Baptist, Gabriel Vlahos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio de Santa Ines), Nick Baker (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West H.S.), John Qualls (Henderson, Nev./Foothill H.S.), Jonathan Evangelista (Brighton, Colo./Brighton Collegiate H.S.), Alec Parmenter (Phoenix/Sunnyslope H.S.), and Ryan Joyce (Cheyenne, Wyo./Central H.S.) all earned a point in singles play.  In doubles play, the teams of Baker/Parmenter and Evangelista/Joyce earned points for the Roadrunners.

Against Bethany (Kan.), Metro State was unable to earn a victory, however, Qualls was able to take a set from his nationally ranked opponent in No. 3 singles.

Then on Friday, the men responded by defeating Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent Colorado State-Pueblo 5-4.  In singles play, Vlahos, Adrien Delvaux (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound H.S.), Baker, and Evangelista earned decisive points for the Roadrunners.  In doubles play, the paring of Parmenter/Baker proved to be the answer as they earned the only point in doubles competition.

On Saturday the men fell to No. 13 Grand Canyon 7-2 before responding by defeating Sonoma State 5-4.  Against Grand Canyon, Vlahos defeated his opponent in No. 1 singles 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 to gain a point for the Roadrunners.  The only other point came from the doubles paring of Evangelista/Joyce as Metro State fell 7-2.

Against Sonoma State, Metro State avenged its loss earlier in the season by defeating the Seawolves 5-4 on Saturday.  In singles action, Vlahos, Delvaux, and Qualls all picked up victories to earn the Roadrunners three points.  The other two points came from doubles play as the teams of Vlahos/Delvaux swept their opponent and Evangelista/Joyce defeated their opponents to help the Roadrunners win 5-4 in Pueblo.

Women:
The women's tennis team lost their opening home match of the spring season to Dallas Baptist 6-3 on Thursday.  Earning points for the Roadrunners were Nicole Herrmann (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Anchieta School) and Sam Schall (Glendale, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) No. 5 and No. 6 singles.  In doubles competition, Herrmann/Nikki Amos (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart H.S.) were the only combination that was able to earn a point.

However, on Friday, the women's team responded by defeating CSU-Pueblo 8-1.  In singles play, Cara Cromwell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.), Alicia Holm (Las Vegas, Nev./Green Valley H.S.), Marianne Evangelista (Brighton, Colo./Brighton Charter School), Amos, Herrmann, and Schall were all able to win their singles matches to earn the Roadrunners six points.  In doubles play, the teams of Cromwell/Holm and Evangelista/Schall were able to earn points for the Roadrunners.

The men's tennis team will be back in action when they host Division I opponent Oral Roberts (Okla.) on Wednesday at 12:45 p.m.  Then on Friday, both the men and women's team will travel to Greeley to take on Northern Colorado.  The weekend ends when both the men and the women host CSU-Pueblo on Saturday at 12 p.m.
