Baseball: Highlands takes Sunday's game to split series

Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Metro State fell 7-2 at New Mexico Highlands on Sunday to split the four-game series with the Cowboys. MSU Denver fell to 7-12, while NMHU improved to 14-7.

Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) pitched seven strong innings for the Roadrunners, allowing four runs, but the offense that had helped carry the team all weekend quieted to just five hits on Sunday.

Chris Prokupek pitched all nine innings for the Cowboys, scattering the five hits and one earned run, while striking out two and walking none.

Things started well for Metro State with Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) and Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) opening the game with consecutive singles, leading to a two-run first inning. But that was it for the Roadrunners as Highlands scored two in the third, one in the fifth and four in the eighth.

Metro State will play at Colorado Mines next weekend.
