Baseball: Metro State swept at CSU-Pueblo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. - Metro State dropped a baseball doubleheader at Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday, falling 9-7 and 4-0. The Roadrunners fell to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSUP improved to 5-5 and 3-0.

Game One
A balk scored Chris Spirek (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) in the third inning to cut MSU Denver's deficit to 2-1, but the ThunderWolves broke through for three in the fourth for a 5-1 lead.

Metro State came back to take the lead in the fifth, scoring five times. The Roadrunners took advantage of an error, a hit batter and a walk, putting together four singles in the inning. Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) delivered an RBI single to score Jacob Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.). With two outs, Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) walked with the bases loaded and Markie Ortivez (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) ripped a two-run single to center for the 6-5 lead.

After a two-out error by MSU Denver, Wade Beauvais ripped a three-run home run and CSUP led the rest of the game.

Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) drove in a run with a single in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-7, but the ThunderWolves pushed across an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.

Tanner Roth (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) (0-1) suffered the loss in relief, allowing four runs (one earned) in 1.1 innings.

Schrupp led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance and Nelson had two hits.

Game Two
ThunderWolves junior right-hander Lonny Schoon shut down Metro State, throwing a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and no walks. He struck out four.

All of the CSU-Pueblo damage was done early as they scored once in the first and their other three runs in the second.

MSU Denver starter Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) (2-2) settled down to finish the game, pitching all six innings. He struck out five.

Schrupp and Levett had each of the Roadrunners' hits.

The two teams will finish the four-game set with one game on Sunday at noon in Pueblo.
