Box Score 2 DENVER - Several timely hits and a strong outing from lefthander
Monique Hernandez (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas H.S.) led Metro State to a softball split with No. 11 Fort Hays State (Kan.) on Wednesday, with FHSU winning 8-1 in game one before the Roadrunners rallied for a 6-4 win in the second half of the twinbill. MSU Denver is now 9-15 overall and the Tigers are 22-4.
Game One
Metro State was limited to two hits--a solo home run by
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) in the third inning, and a single by
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) in the seventh--in the loss.
Brittany Moss (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) kept MSU Denver in the game for four innings, but the Tigers scored five in the sixth to build their lead to 8-1.
Hernandez tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit.
Game Two
Hernandez allowed seven hits in seven innings to earn her second win of the season. The Roadrunners rallied from a 2-0 deficit after the first inning, scoring one in the fourth on a solo home run by
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.), and adding five in the fifth.
Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.) and
Stephanie Dunham (Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho H.S.) each delivered two-run doubles in the inning.
Hernandez gave up a two-run home run in the sixth with nobody out, but recovered to escape without any more damage. She pitched around a one-out double and a two-out walk in the seventh to get a fly out to end the game.
Metro State will play at Colorado Mines on Friday in a pod with Colorado Mesa.
