Baseball: Baldini's walk-off in the 11th tops Regis

Box Score DENVER - Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) blasted a three-run walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Metro State a 7-5 win over Regis University on Thursday afternoon. The Roadrunners improved to 9-13 overall and 5-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Rangers fell to 14-5 and 9-5.

It was Baldini's first career home run at Metro State, capping his 3-for-6 afternoon with four runs batted in. Jacob Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) also had three this and Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) and Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.) each had two.

Baldini's blast overshadowed an excellent outing from Patrick Gojan (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.), who pitched the first nine innings and allowed just five hits and no walks with three strikeouts. Only one of the four runs he allowed was earned. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.

MSU Denver took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out single by Miller that scored Nelson.

After Regis pushed four across in the top of the fifth, the Roadrunners clawed back late.

Metro State opened the eighth inning with four straight hits, including a double by Nelson, to score two runs and trim the deficit to 4-3.

In the ninth inning, Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) led off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.), MSU Denver loaded the bases with a hit batter and a walk. Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center to score Gibbons and send the game to extra innings.

After a scoreless 10th inning, Regis scored one run in the 11th to lead 5-4 heading into the bottom half. Cammall led off the 11th with a single for the Roadrunners and moved to second on a sac bunt by Levett. After an intentional walk to Nelson and a strikeout by Schrupp, Baldini crushed his home run halfway up the netting beyond the left-field fence.

Carlos Luzon (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Instituto Escuela) (1-0) earned the win, recording the final out of the top of the 11th.

The two teams will meet for a doubleheader at noon on Friday at Auraria Field.
