Baseball: Nelson's two home runs lead Metro State to split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENVER - Metro State earned a walk-off win for the second day in a row over Regis to split with the Rangers at home on Friday, falling 5-3 in game one and winning 6-5 in eight innings in game two. MSU Denver is now 10-14 overall and 6-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Regis is 15-6 and 10-5.

Game One
Justin Arceneaux (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo H.S.) was strong for four innings, but the Rangers got to him in the fifth for three runs. Arceneaux pitched five innings and allowed seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts to take the loss.

Down 5-0 in the sixth, MSU Denver scored three unearned runs with two outs, highlighted by a pinch-hit RBI single by Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.). But that was all the Roadrunners could muster against RU pitcher Kirby Schwein, who allowed six hits and three unearned runs in the seven-inning complete game with two strikeouts.

Game Two
Jacob Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) blasted two home runs as the Roadrunners earned their second walk-off win over Regis in as many days after Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) hit a three-run walk-off home run in the 11th inning on Friday.

Nelson's first-inning shot to right field drove in Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) for a 2-0 lead.

Ahead 1-0, Nelson hit another two-run shot after a double by Levett for a 4-1 lead.

Pinch hitter Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.) delivered an RBI double down the left-field line to score Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) for a 5-1 lead.

Regis pushed across four runs in the sixth to tie the game, sending starter Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) to the showers. Thill had allowed one unearned run through five innings, but his first three batters reached base in the sixth and all three scored after the bullpen gave up two hits and a walk after a sacrifice fly.

Carlos Luzon (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Instituto Escuela) earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings. He escaped a jam in the top of the eighth after allowing a one-out double, but used a foul out and fielder's choice to negate any damage.

Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) earned a one-out walk for MSU Denver and Levett's single to left moved Cammall to third and Levett advanced to second on the throw. After an intentional walk to Nelson, Schrupp hit the game-winning sacrifice fly to right.

Metro State will host Regis at noon for a nine-inning game on Saturday.
