Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) hit a game-winning home run in game two as Metro State swept Western New Mexico 5-3 and 8-7 at home on Saturday. The Roadrunners improved to 12-17 overall and 5-12 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WNMU fell to 13-20 and 10-12.
Game One
The Roadrunners fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first after two home run, but
Monique Hernandez (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas H.S.) recovered to hold the Mustangs scoreless the rest of the game to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Dani Sandel (Omaha, Neb./Westside H.S.) delivered a two-run single to score Taney and Oury in the third inning and MSU Denver tied the game in the fourth when
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) singled home
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) with two outs.
The score remained 3-3 until Taney hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to score pinch runner
Brooke Quinlan (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.).
Game Two
The Roadrunners again got off to a rough start as starter
Brittany Moss (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) allowed four runs in the top of the first. However, they answered right away with four in the bottom of the inning. Oury led off with a triple. Later in the inning, Brew had an RBI single,
Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) had an RBI double and Towner delivered a two-run double.
Hernandez relieved Moss two outs into the first inning and slowed the Mustangs offense. She gave up one run in the second and two in the fourth for a final line of three runs allowed in 6.1 innings.
Down 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth, Metro State took the lead with four runs again. Three straight Roadrunners reached base to open the inning. After a sacrifice fly by Taney, Oury crushed a three-run home run to center field to put MSU Denver ahead.
Hernandez pitched around a two-out single to close the game.
Metro State will face Fort Lewis and Chadron State in Chadron, Neb., next weekend.
