DENVER- Metro State women's tennis team defeated both Colorado Mesa and Montana State-Billings while the men's tennis team fell to both CMU and MSU-Billings.
Women:
The women's tennis team defeated Colorado Mesa 5-4 on Saturday in Billings, Mont. Beginning the day off, the Roadrunners were able to take 2-of-3 matches from the Mavericks in doubles play. The team of
Cara Cromwell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.)/
Alicia Holm (Las Vegas, Nev./Green Valley H.S.) were able to hold on to defeat the pairing of Davis/McNamara for the Mavericks 9-8 (11-9) to earn the victory for the Roadrunners in No. 1 Doubles. Also in doubles action, the team of
Nikki Amos (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart H.S.)/
Nicole Herrmann (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Anchieta School) defeated their opponents in No. 3 Doubles 8-2 to earn the point.
Earning victories for the Roadrunners in singles play were Cromwell, Amos, and Herrmann. Cromwell defeated Davis of Colorado Mesa in No. 1 Singles 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. Amos defeated her opponent in No. 4 Singles 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 and Herrmann defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-1 in No. 5 Singles.
Later in the day, the women's tennis team defeated Montana State-Billings 6-3. In doubles play, the pairing of Cromwell/Holm and Herrmann/Amos proved too much for their opponents and both teams earned victory for the Roadrunners. Cromwell/Holm defeated the pairing of Shephard/Nichols for the Yellow Jackets 8-1 in No. 1 Doubles to earn the win. In No. 3 Doubles Herrmann/Amos were able to hold on to defeat their opponent 9-7.
In singles play, Cromwell, Amos, Herrmann, and
Sam Schall (Glendale, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) all earned victories in their matches to help guide the Roadrunners to victory over the Yellow Jackets. Cromwell once again won No. 1 Singles this time against Shephard for Montana State-Billings 6-1, 6-1. Amos defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-1 in No. 4 Singles and Herrmann defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-2. Schall was also able to earn a victory in singles play after coming back to defeat her opponent 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in No. 6 Singles.
Overall for the weekend, Cromwell, Amos, and Herrmann all went undefeated in both singles and doubles play for the Roadrunners.
The women's tennis team will be back in action on Friday April 5th when the Roadrunners host the Mustangs of Western New Mexico at 1 p.m. at Gates Tennis Club.
Men:
The men's tennis team fell to Colorado Mesa 7-2 on Saturday in Billings, Mont. In the loss the Roadrunners were able to gain points from
Gabriel Vlahos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio de Santa Ines) who defeated Jordan Lyden of Colorado Mesa in No. 1 Singles. Lyden was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Player of the Week for the week of March 20. Vlahos defeated Lyden 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to earn the victory. Also gaining a point for the Roadrunners was
Alec Parmenter (Phoenix/Sunnyslope H.S.) who defeated his opponent in No. 6 Singles 6-4, 6-1.
Later in the day, the Roadrunners faced the Yellow Jackets and ultimately fell 9-0.
The men's tennis team will be back in action on Friday, April 5th when the Roadrunners host the Mustangs of Western New Mexico at 1 p.m. at Gates Tennis Center.
