Box Score DENVER - No. 7 Colorado Mesa tied the game with two outs in the ninth and earned a 3-2 win in 10 innings at Metro State on Friday afternoon at Auraria Field. The Mavericks improved to 27-6 overall and 21-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while MSU Denver fell to 13-17 and 9-12.
In a battle of two of the top draft-eligible starting pitchers in the RMAC, Metro State's
Patrick Gojan (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) and CMU's Nolan Snell did not disappoint. Gojan pitched nine innings for the Roadrunners, scattering six hits and did not walk a batter. Snell lasted 6.1 innings and struck out five, allowing one earned run.
The Mavericks struck in the top of the first when Nate Robertson's slow rolling single between the mound and home plate drove in Garrett Carpenter with two outs.
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) tied the game with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth.
MSU Denver took a 2-1 lead in the seventh.
Markie Ortivez (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a passed ball. After two strikeouts,
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) ripped a double down the left field line to score Ortivez.
Gojan retired CMU in order in the top of the eighth on just seven pitches, but a leadoff single in the ninth by Erik Kozel led to a two-out RBI single by Robertson to send the game to extra innings.
After MSU Denver went scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, the Mavericks took the lead on a single by Kozel. Mavericks righthander Aaron Corwin pitched around a one-out single by
Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) to close the game and earn the win with two scoreless innings of relief and five strikeouts.
Metro State left 11 runners on base in the game.
The two teams will play a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
