Box Score 2 DENVER - Metro State was swept by No. 7 Colorado Mesa on Saturday at home, falling 13-2 and 3-2 in nine innings. CMU improved to 29-6 overall and 23-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while MSU Denver fell to 13-19 and 9-14.
Game One
The Roadrunners committed four errors in the first two innings, falling behind 12-0 after two frames. However, Metro State responded with five solid innings after that, led by
Derek Stimpson (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.), who pitched 4.2 shutout innings of relief, scattering three hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
MSU Denver scored both of its runs in the fourth inning.
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) singled in
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) and
Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) drove in
Jacob Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) with a ground out.
Schrupp led the team with two hits.
Matt Williams struck out nine in a complete game victory for the Mavericks, allowing just one earned run in seven innings.
Game Two
Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) pitched a gem for the Roadrunners, throwing seven innings and striking out six with just five hits and one earned run allowed.
Levett provided Metro State with a two-run lead in the third on his towering home run to left field that also scored
Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.).
Three errors cost the Roadrunners in the sixth inning as they surrendered the lead. After each team went scoreless in the seventh, the teams went to extra innings. MSU Denver stranded runners on second and third to end the seventh.
Kevin Hand (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) shut down CMU in the top of the eighth and the Roadrunners also went down in order in the inning.
Three straight two-out singles by the Mavericks gave them a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth and Metro State stranded a one-out walk to end the game.
The two teams will meet on Sunday for a nine-inning game at noon at Auraria Field.
