Tennis: Men and women both finish the regular season out strong

DENVER- Metro State men's and women's tennis teams both defeated Hastings (Neb.) and Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday at Gates Tennis Club.  Against Hastings Metro State men's tennis won 8-1 and women's tennis won 9-0.  Against CSU-Pueblo Metro State men's tennis won 7-2 and women's tennis won 8-1 on Senior Night.

Game One (Hastings):
Men:
The men's tennis team won 8-1 in the morning matches to improve to 10-14 on the season.

In doubles play, the No. 1 Doubles team of Gabriel Vlahos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio de Santa Ines)/Adrien Delvaux (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound H.S.) defeated their opponent 8-2 to help set the tone for the rest of the day.  In No. 2 Doubles Nick Baker (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West H.S.)/Alec Parmenter (Phoenix/Sunnyslope H.S.) won 8-5 and in No. 3 Doubles Ryan Joyce (Cheyenne, Wyo./Central H.S.)/John Qualls (Henderson, Nev./Foothill H.S.) won 8-3.

In singles play, Vlahos won No. 1 Singles 6-1, 7-5 while doubles teammate Delvaux won his No. 2 Singles match 6-3, 6-0.  Baker won No. 3 Singles 6-1, 6-1.  Jonathan Evangelista (Brighton, Colo./Brighton Collegiate H.S.) won No. 5 Singles 6-0, 6-1 and Joyce won No. 6 Singles 3-6, 6-2, 10-7.

The loss dropped NAIA foe Hastings to 3-9 on the season.

Women:
The women's tennis team defeated Hastings 9-0 on Saturday morning to improve their record to 12-13 on the season.

In doubles play, Metro State was able to take care of business by handedly winning all of their matches.  In No. 1 Doubles the team of Cara Cromwell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.)/Alicia Holm (Las Vegas, Nev./Green Valley H.S.) won 8-1.  In No. 2 Doubles the team of Sam Schall (Glendale, Ariz./Cactus H.S.)/Marianne Evangelista (Brighton, Colo./Brighton Charter School) won 8-1.  In No. 3 Doubles the team of Nicole Herrmann (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Anchieta School)/Nikki Amos (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart H.S.) won 8-4.

In singles play, Metro State continued its winning ways as it won 6-0 in singles.  In No. 1 Singles Cromwell won 6-1, 6-0.  In No. 2 Singles Holm won 6-2, 6-0.  In No. 3 Singles Evangelista won 6-2, 7-5 to move into 3rd place all time on the Metro State career singles wins list.  In No. 4 Singles Amos won 6-4, 6-0.  In No. 5 Singles Herrmann won 6-4, 6-0 and Schall won No. 6 Singles 6-2, 6-1.

The loss dropped NAIA foe Hastings to 1-8 on the season.


Game Two (CSU-Pueblo):
Men:
The men's tennis team won 7-2 on Senior Night at Denver Tennis Club to improve to 11-14 on the season.

Before the game the seniors Joyce, Parmenter, and Vlahos were all honored for their outstanding Roadrunner careers.

In doubles play, Metro State was able to come away with the sweep as all three teams earned the victory.  The pairing of Vlahos/ Delvaux won No. 1 Doubles 8-5.  The team of Baker/Parmenter won No. 2 Doubles 8-5 and the team of Joyce/Qualls won No. 3 Doubles 8-2.

In No. 1 Doubles, Vlahos/Delvaux were down 3-5 in the match but managed to come back and clinched the victory in emphatic fashion on Vlahos' ace to earn the 8-5 victory.  But not to be outdone, in the No. 3 Doubles pairing of Joyce/Qualls, Joyce clinched the victory with an ace as well in his last home match of his career (Joyce did not play in singles).

In singles play, Metro State was able to take 4-of-6 matches by winning the top four matches against CSU-Pueblo.  Vlahos won his match in No. 1 Singles 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.  Delvaux won his match in No. 2 Singles 6-2, 6-3.  Baker won his matches in No. 3 Singles 6-2, 6-4 and Qualls won his match in No. 4 Singles 6-2, 6-0.

The loss dropped CSU-Pueblo to 3-15 on the season.

The men's tennis team will be back in action on Friday when the Roadrunners travel to Grand Junction, Colo. for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.  In the first round No. 4 Metro State will again face No. 5 CSU-Pueblo.  The match will begin at 11 a.m.  The winner of the matchup will face the No. 1 seed Western New Mexico at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Women:
The women's tennis team continued their dominating performance on Saturday as they defeated CSU-Pueblo 9-0 on Senior Night.

Before the matches began, the seniors Amos, Evangelista, Herrmann, Holm, and Schall were all honored and recognized for their outstanding Roadrunner careers.

In doubles play, Metro State was able to sweep the matches to take the early lead.  In No. 1 Doubles, the pairing of Cromwell/Holm won 8-5.  The win helped Holm move into 6th place in Metro State history for the most wins in No. 1 Doubles. 

In No. 2 Doubles, the team of Schall/Evangelista won 8-6.  The victory helped Evangelista move into 3rd place and Schall move into a tie for 6th place on the Metro State school record list for most doubles victories in a career.

In No. 3 Doubles, the team of Herrmann/Amos won their match 8-5 helping Herrmann move into a 4th place tie and Amos into an 11th place tie on the Metro State school record list for most doubles victories in a career.

The Roadrunners used their momentum into singles play as they again swept CSU-Pueblo going 6-0 in the matches to help seal the victory.

In No. 1 Singles Cromwell won her match 6-1, 6-0.  In No. 2 Singles Holm won 6-4, 6-2.  In No. 3 Singles Evangelista won 6-1, 6-3.  In No. 4 Singles Amos won 6-4, 6-3 to a tie for 8th place on the Metro State career singles win list.  In No. 5 Singles Herrmann won 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 to help move into a 6th place tie on the Metro State career singles win list.  In No. 6 Singles Schall won 6-2, 6-4.

The loss dropped CSU-Pueblo to 6-8 on the season.

Metro State women's tennis team will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Grand Junction, Colo. for the RMAC Championships.  The Roadrunners earned the No. 2 seed  which means that they will face the winner of No. 3 Colorado Mesa and No. 6 Colorado Christian at 2 p.m. on Friday.
