GRAND JUNCTION- Both men's and women's tennis teams fell in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on Saturday. The men's tennis team defeated Colorado State-Pueblo 5-2 before falling to No. 33 Western New Mexico 5-2 later in the day. The women's tennis team fell to Colorado Mesa 5-3 in the RMAC semifinals.
Men:
The men's tennis team knocked off CSU-Pueblo 5-2 in the RMAC Quarterfinals to advance to face Western New Mexico in the semifinals.
Against CSU-Pueblo, the men's team was able to take care of business as they were the No. 4 seed and knocked off the No. 5 seeded Thunderwolves.
In doubles play, the teams of
Gabriel Vlahos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio de Santa Ines)/
Adrien Delvaux (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound H.S.) and
Nick Baker (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West H.S.)/
Alec Parmenter (Phoenix/Sunnyslope H.S.) both were able to defeat their respective opponents as the Roadrunners took 2-of-3 matches in doubles.
In singles play, Vlahos,
Jonathan Evangelista (Brighton, Colo./Brighton Collegiate H.S.), and Parmenter defeated their opponents to take give the Roadrunners the victory. The rest of the matches did not finish as Metro State had already clinched the victory.
Against Western New Mexico, Metro State was unable to continue its momentum as it fell 5-2 to the No. 1 seeded Mustangs.
The Roadrunners tried hard to continue their upset bid by taking 2-of-3 matches in doubles play again to take the lead after doubles play.
No. 1 doubles teammates Vlahos/Delvaux were able to pull off the upset of Almeida/Pablo Fuentes 9-7 to give the pairing their first victory over a regionally ranked opponent. Almeida/Pablo Fuentes were ranked No. 8 in the South Central Region coming into the match.
The victory which also was the fifth in a row for the pairing of Vlahos/Delvaux gave Vlahos his 27th career No. 1 doubles victory which moves him into 7th place all time at Metro State.
No. 2 doubles pairing of Baker/Parmenter also pulled off the upset as they defeated Nunez/Damasio 8-5 to give the Roadrunners their second and final point of the match.
In singles action, Western New Mexico took No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles to clinch the match against Metro State and advance to the RMAC final.
However, coming off his upset victory in doubles, Vlahos tried to pull off another upset this time in No. 1 singles against the No. 42nd ranked player in the nation in Almeida. Vlahos ultimately lost 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 but performed admirably in the loss after falling 6-0, 6-4 in the last time these two faced each other.
The men's tennis team fell to Western New Mexico in the RMAC tournament on Saturday. The Roadrunners will face Montana State-Billings on Sunday in the 3rd place match.
Women:
The women's tennis team fell to Colorado Mesa 5-3 on Saturday in the RMAC semifinals.
In doubles play, No. 1 doubles teammates of
Cara Cromwell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.)/
Alicia Holm (Las Vegas, Nev./Green Valley H.S.) defeated Davis/McNara 8-5 to give Holm her 32nd career No. 1 doubles victory.
In singles play, No. 1 singles player Cromwell defeated Davis 6-0, 6-0 to give Cromwell her 14th victory of the year. Cromwell with the victory moved into 3rd place in Metro State history for the most victories in No. 1 singles for a freshman.
In No. 4 singles,
Nikki Amos (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart H.S.) defeated McLaughlin 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 to give the Roadrunners their third and final point against the Mavericks.
Metro State will face Colorado State-Pueblo in the 3rd place match on Sunday.
