Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Metro State earned a split in softball on Sunday, falling 3-2 at New Mexico Highlands before an 8-5 win in game two.
Game One
The Roadrunners led 2-0 after an RBI single by
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) in the first inning and another from
Dani Sandel (Omaha, Neb./Westside H.S.) in the fourth.
The Cowgirls struck for three in the bottom of the sixth and that was it for the Roadrunners. MSU Denver got a single from
Amanda Taney (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) and a walk by
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) with two outs in the top of the seventh, but a ground out ended the game.
Metro State left 15 runners on base in the game, handing
Monique Hernandez (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas H.S.) the tough loss. She allowed three runs in six innings.
Taney led the team with four hits and
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) and Hernandez each had two.
Game Two
The Roadrunners broke out for three runs in the top of the second.
Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.) drove in Brew with a single down the left field line and
Stephanie Dunham (Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho H.S.) ripped a two-run double to score Towner and Tillery.
After the Cowgirls tied the game in the bottom of the inning, MSU Denver took the lead for good in the third. Sandel singled to start the inning and
Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) was hit by a pitch. Both player scored later in the inning as Towner had an RBI single and Tillery had a sacrifice fly.
Metro State broke the game open in the fifth with three more runs to take an 8-3 lead. Garcia drove in Sandel with a one-out single and Brew followed with a two-run home run to right.
NMHU scored twice in the bottom of the inning, but
Brittany Moss (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) came away with the win, allowing five runs in seven innings.
Metro State will wrap up the season at home next weekend against Black Hills State. Saturday's doubleheader at noon will feature a fundraiser for
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.), who is battling ovarian cancer. Sunday will be Senior Day.
