Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. - Metro State posted season highs for runs and hits in a 21-7 thrashing at Adams State to clinch a spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament on Sunday. The Roadrunners improved to 18-23 overall and 14-18 in the RMAC, while ASU fell to 10-35 and 9-25.
It was the most runs scored for MSU Denver in a game since 2010.
Jacob Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) continued his torrid offensive streak, going 2-for-4 with six runs batted in, a grand slam, and a double. He finished the four-game weekend series in Alamosa 9-for-15 (.600) with 18 RBIs, five home runs and two doubles. He also walked five times.
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) was 3-for-6 with four RBIs and two home runs on Sunday. Freshman
Derek Stimpson (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) also hit a grand slam.
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) was 5-for-5 with a walk, leading MSU Denver to a season-high 21 hits. He entered the weekend batting .208, but saw his average skyrocket to .268 for the season.
Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) and
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) also had two hits each.
Nelson's two-run double in the top of the first highlighted a four-run inning and the Roadrunners led 4-1 after the first.
MSU Denver scored seven times in the third. Nelson provided a grand slam down the right field line and Schrupp followed with a solo shot as the two hit back-to-back home runs.
Andrew Paust (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) and
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) also had RBI singles in the third.
The Grizzlies scored twice in the bottom of the third and two more times in the fourth to cut their deficit to 11-5.
Another solo homer by Schrupp in the fifth pushed to lead to 12-5.
Leading 12-6 in the eighth, Metro State scored five more times. Schrupp and
Chris Spirek (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) each had two-run singles and
Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.) drew a bases-loaded walk.
In the ninth, it was Stimpson's grand slam to right-center in his first career at bat to provided a four-run inning. Stimpson had walked twice previously this season in his only other two plate appearances.
Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) (4-3) earned the win, pitching five innings.
Metro State will wrap up the regular season at home next weekend against New Mexico Highlands.
