Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, Colo.- Metro State split its games on Friday against Colorado Christian falling in the first game 10-9 before pulling out the victory in game two 5-1. The Roadrunners record improved to 11-16 on the season and 7-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Cougars record is now 4-25 and 2-18 in RMAC play.
Game One:
The Roadrunners were unable to hold onto the lead as the Cougars scored five runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to pull ahead and earn the victory 10-9.
Patrick Gojan (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) put forth another strong outing for Metro State as he pitched six innings only giving up four earned runs while striking out three batters in the process. The bullpen for the Roadrunners was unable to hold onto the lead as they gave up five earned runs after Gojan went out of the game.
Colorado Christian started the scoring off in the bottom of the 1st inning when Wenzel scored on Ray's infield single to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The Cougars added two more runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning when McMahon was able to score off Dudley's single to left field and Wenzel scored his second run of the game Bachara reached on a fielder's choice.
Metro State was able to respond with three runs in the top of the 3rd inning to tie the game up at 3-3 on runs from
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.),
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.), and
Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.). Baca was able to score on
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.)' sacrifice fly to center field from 3rd base. Two batters later after Cammall had reached base on a walk, Levett hit a 2-run home run to left field to tie the game up at 3-3.
The Roadrunners added two more runs in the top of the 4th inning when
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) and
Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.) scored runs to pull ahead 5-3. Schrupp scored from 2nd base on Baca's single to center field to give the Roadrunners the first lead of the day. Miller later scored from 2nd base as well when
Markie Ortivez (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) singled to left field to give the Roadrunners a 5-3 lead.
The Cougars rallied back as they scored one run in both the bottom of the 5th and 6th innings to tie the game at 5-5. Landrith scored in the bottom of the 5th on Batt's sacrifice fly to center field. Bachara then scored in the bottom of the 6th inning on an error to tie the game at 5-5.
In the top of the 7th inning the Roadrunners' bats came alive as they were able to score four runs to pull ahead 9-5. Ortivez started the scoring off as he scored from 3rd base with the bases loaded off Levett's RBI foul ball down the left field side. On the very next batter, Gibbons scored on a balk to increase the lead to 7-5 and then
Jacob Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) hit a 2-run home run to right field to give the Roadrunners a 9-5 lead.
The Roadrunners were unable to hold on to the lead however, as the Cougars rallied to score five runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to pull ahead 10-9. The Cougar's bullpen was able to hold onto the lead as they did not allow the Roadrunners to score in either the top of the 8th or 9th inning to preserve the victory for the Cougars 10-9.
Game Two:
Metro State was able to avenge its loss earlier in the day to Colorado Christian as
Justin Arceneaux (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo H.S.) pitched seven strong innings earning the victory to help the Roadrunners win 5-1.
The Roadrunners got the scoring going in the top of the 2nd inning when they were able to score three runs on only 1 hit. Both Miller and Ortivez were brought in by Gibbons with his triple to left field to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead. Gibbons scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to give Metro State a 3-0 lead.
Metro State tacked on another run in the top of the 3rd inning when Miller singled to left field scoring Schrupp who reached after being hit by a pitch.
Colorado Christian was finally able to get on the board when it scored one run in the bottom of the 5th inning to cut the lead to 4-1 for Metro State.
The Roadrunners scored their final run of the game in the top of the 6th inning when
Andrew Paust (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) scored from 3rd base on Cammall's sacrifice fly to center field.
Metro State will be back in action on Saturday when it faces Colorado Christian for another double header in Lakewood starting at 12 p.m.
