Baseball: Nelson breaks school record for consecutive games with a homer

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENVER - Jacob Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) blasted two more home runs on Saturday as Metro State split a doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands, winning 12-8 in Game One before an 8-5 setback in game two. MSU Denver is now 19-24 overall and 15-19 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while NMHU is 27-21 and 23-15.

Nelson broke the school record for consecutive games with a home run as his current streak now sits at six. The previous record was five games set by Doug Montgomery in 1986. The Division II record is nine games.

Game One
Nelson went 2-for-3 with three runs and three runs batted and Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Reilly Mau (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) and Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) also each went 2-for-3.

Trailing 3-0 in the third, Mau scored the first run for the Roadrunners on a sacrifice fly by Cammall. Nelson scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to trim the deficit to 3-2.

The Cowboys scored once more in the fifth, but Nelson ripped a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to left-center to give MSU Denver a 5-4 lead.

Cammall hit a bloop double to center with two outs in the sixth to score Gibbons and Mau for a 7-4 lead.

That score remained until the Cowboys struck for four runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead.

The Roadrunners answered right back with five in the bottom of the eighth. Andrew Paust (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) singled and scored on a base hit up the middle by Gibbons to tie the game. Metro State took the lead on a throwing error by the NMHU catcher after Cammall stole second, allowing Gibbons to come in from third. The Roadrunners scored three more times with the aid of a pair of errors.

Eli Ford (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh H.S.) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, striking out two.

Game Two
Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.) lined a two-out, bases-loaded double to left-center in the bottom of the first as the Roadrunners jumped on top 2-0.

Trailing 4-2 in the fourth, Chris Spirek (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) stole second base and moved to third and then scored on a pair of wild pitches to cut the deficit to one. Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) tied the game in the fifth with a sharp single to left, scoring Nelson from second.

The Cowboys scored four times in the top of the seventh to lead 8-4. Nelson led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to center field, but the next three batters were retired to end the game.

Nelson went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) had a pair of hits.

The two teams will wrap up the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader at Auraria Field beginning at 11 a.m.
