Softball: Roadrunners open season with split in Texas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas - Metro State opened the 2014 season with an 11-2 win in six innings over Texas A&M-Kingsville before a 13-1 setback in five innings at No. 8 West Texas A&M. TAMUK fell to 5-6 with the loss, while WTAMU improved to 7-0.

Game One
It was all Metro State from the start as the new-look Roadrunners under new head coach Annie Van Wetzinga had the team playing small ball and taking advantage of several Javelinas miscues. Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) scored the first run of the game in the first after leading off the season with a single through the left side. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a single, Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.) got caught in a rundown with two outs, allowing Oury to score from third base.

Texas A&M-Kingsville made an error to open the second and Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) reached second base. The Roadrunners used a bunt single by Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and took advantage of a passed ball and another error to score three times in the second inning.

Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) doubled with one out in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Towner.

After the Javelinas scored twice in the fourth, Metro State scored two times in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Maul finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, falling just a home run short of the cycle. She also drove in three runs and scored twice.

Bakovich and Britney Thomas (Cheyenne, Wyo./East H.S.) each had two hits.

Freshman Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) pitched all seven innings and struck out five without walking a batter.

Game Two
The Roadrunners led briefly after a one-out triple by Dani Sandel (Omaha, Neb./Westside H.S.) in the first inning. She scored on a single up the middle by Tillery.

But the eighth-ranked team dominated from its first at bat as the Lady Buffs' first six batters reached base as they scored eight times in the first inning. They added two more in the second and three in the third.

Bakovich had the only other hit for MSU Denver.

Metro State will face Tarleton State and Eastern New Mexico on Saturday in Canyon, Texas.
