Softball: Towner's grand slam leads Roadrunners to win over No. 17 Angelo State

Box Score CANYON, Texas - Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) belted a grand slam in the third inning to lead Metro State to a 12-7 win over No. 17 Angelo State (Texas) in softball on Sunday. The Roadrunners improved to 4-1 this season, while ASU fell to 9-5.

Metro State trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the third, but a leadoff single by Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.), followed by walks to Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) and Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) set up Towner's home run down the left field line. The Roadrunners led the rest of the game.

A solo homer by Dani Sandel (Omaha, Neb./Westside H.S.) and a two-run blast by Harmon in the first inning gave Metro State an early 3-0 lead.

A three-run double by the Rambelles in the second put them up 4-3 and they added another run in the top of the third.

After the four-run third for the Roadrunners, they added another in the fifth when Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) singled home Harmon.

The lead stretched to 12-6 in the sixth inning after a two-run single by Tillery, followed by a two-run home run by Maul.

Freshman Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) improved to 3-0 on the season, pitching all seven innings. She struck out three.

All nine Roadrunners had at least one hit in the game as they connected for a season-high 14 as a team. Tillery led the way with three and Sandel, Harmon and Towner each had two.

Metro State will open conference play next weekend at Colorado Mesa.
