Softball: Metro State splits RMAC opener with big innings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Metro State split its conference-opening softball series on Saturday, earning a 12-6 win in Game One before a walk-off 10-9 loss in Game Two. The Roadrunners are now 5-2 overall and CMU is now 2-6.

Game One
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 6-0 lead after an inning-and-a-half, highlighted by Dani Sandel (Omaha, Neb./Westside H.S.)'s solo home run in the first inning and Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.)'s two-run double in the second.

The Mavericks rallied back to tie the game 6-6 after four innings. Metro State responded in the sixth with three runs. Sandel scored on a ground out by Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) to break the tie. Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) and Britney Thomas (Cheyenne, Wyo./East H.S.) each had run-scoring singles in the inning as well.

Metro State pushed three more across in the seventh with RBI singles by Sandel and Towner and an RBI double by Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.).

Harmon and Towner each had three hits and Oury, Sandel and Tillery each had two.

Hailey Eisenhauer (Windsor, Calif./Cardinal Newman H.S.) earned the win in relief with 3.1 shutout innings, allowing just two hits.

Game Two
The Roadrunners scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to rally from a 7-1 deficit. After taking a 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh, Karissa Nickeson led off the bottom with a home run and Sarah Phillis followed with a triple. Lindsay Drayer ended the game with a base hit to score Phillis.

The first four batters of the fifth inning reached base for the Roadrunners to start the comeback, including back-to-back doubles by Sandel and Tillery. Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) cut the deficit to 7-6 with a two-run home run and Colissa Backovich drove in Thomas to tie the game with two outs.

Down to their final out in the top of the seventh, Oury delivered a two-run single for a 9-8 lead, scoring Brew and Thomas.

Sandel and Brew each had two hits to pace the offense.

The two teams will meet again for two games on Sunday at 11 a.m.
