Baseball: Timely hits come up short in losses to Highlands

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENVER - Metro State dropped two tough losses at home on Friday, falling 4-2 and 7-6 (8 innings) to New Mexico Highlands at Auraria Field. The losses dropped the Roadrunners to 3-9 overall, while NMHU improved to 9-10.

Metro State stranded 10 runners in Game Two, including runners on second and third with one out in the eighth inning of the scheduled seven-inning game. Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.) had three of the team's 10 hits and Chris Spirek (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) had two.

Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) drove in the first run of the second game with a double to left in the second inning and he later scored on a passed ball. Spirek later drove in Miller with a single and then helped Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) score on a double steal.

Trailing 5-4 in the seventh, Miller bounced a base hit through the middle to tie the game with two outs, bringing home Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.). But the potential winning run was thrown out at third on the play to send the game to extra innings.

After falling behind 7-5 in the top of the eighth, Reeves and Danny Westerberg (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) led off with walks and were moved to second with a sacrifice bunt by Spirek. But the Cowboys pitched out of the jam, despite walking the bases loaded with two outs.

In Game One, NMHU righthander Blake Harrison shut the Roadrunners down, scattering three hits and an unearned run with 10 strikeouts over seven innings.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again for a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m.
