Baseball: Roadrunners fall in doubleheader with Highlands

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENVER - For the second day in a row, New Mexico Highlands swept a doubleheader at Metro State, winning 10-7 and 6-2 at Auraria Field on Saturday. The Roadrunners fell to 3-11 overall, while the Cowboys improved to 11-10.

Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) combined for three hits in the two games to pace the offense. He and Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) each went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in during the first game.

Trailing 8-1 in the fifth inning of Game One, the Roadrunners pushed four runs across in the bottom of the inning to climb back in, highlighted by a two-run, pinch-hit double by Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.). They got within 8-7 in the seventh, scoring two. Baca drove in a run with a single to left and and scored when Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Cowboys pulled away with two late runs.

Metro State committed three error in the first three innings to fall behind 5-1 in Game Two, spoiling an early 1-0 lead after Danny Westerberg (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) led off the bottom of the first with a double.

Reilly Mau (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) scored MSU Denver's other run in the fifth.

Kris Lalk (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) pitched two shutout innings of relief.

Metro State wore teal-colored jerseys in support of softball player Aubree Maul's victory over Ovarian Cancer.

Metro State will host Colorado Mines next weekend in a four-game series.
