Baseball: Six-run fifth leads Roadrunners past No. 25 CMU

Box Score DENVER - Metro State scored six runs in the fifth inning to earn a 9-7 win over No. 25/16 Colorado Mesa on Tuesday in non-conference action at Auaria Field. The Roadrunners improved to 5-14 overall, while CMU fell to 16-6.

Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in, two runs scored and a double to lead the offense. Six pitchers combined for the win for MSU Denver. Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) was credited with the victory, allowing one run in two innings of relief. Kevin Hand (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) picked up the save with two strikeouts in the ninth. Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) surrendered just one run in three innings in his first career start and Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) tossed a scoreless sixth inning.

Trailing 6-0 after allowing four runs in the top of the fifth, Metro State pushed six across to tie the game. Marcus Bean (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) and Danny Westerberg (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) doubled early in the inning and Baca and Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.) later had run-scoring singles.

Baca's leadoff double in the seventh put Metro State up 7-6, but the Mavericks tied it up with one in the eighth.

A Mavericks error and an RBI single by Baca in the eighth scored Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.) and Reilly Mau (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) to give the Roadrunners a two-run lead in the bottom of the eighth. Hand pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth.

Metro State will play at Regis on Friday.
