Box Score DENVER - Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.) and
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) each had four hits as Metro State earned an 11-4 victory at Regis University on Friday afternoon in Denver. The Roadrunners improved to 6-14 overall and 4-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with their second straight win, while the Rangers dropped to 10-12 and 7-8.
Gibbons scored three times and Purvis drove in four runs to help the offense.
Metro State got on the board with a two-run double with two outs in the top of the first inning, driving in Gibbons and
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.).
Tied 2-2 in the third, Purvis again brought in Gibbons, this time with a single to left-center.
Gibbons tied the game 4-4 in the fifth inning with a single to bring home
Danny Westerberg (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.).
That score remained until struck for a pair of runs in the top of the eighth with two outs.
Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) doubled home
Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) for the lead and
Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) reached on an error to bring in Baldini for a 6-4 lead.
MSU Denver blew open the lead in the top of the ninth with five runs as it took advantage of two walks, a hit batter and an error.
Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) threw seven strong innings, scattering 10 hits and striking out five.
Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and
Eli Ford (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh H.S.) each tossed a scoreless inning to close out the game.
The two teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday at Regis.
