Baseball: Gibbons and Hand lead Metro State to split with Regis

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENVER - Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) belted a home run and Kevin Hand (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) pitched a complete game in Game Two as Metro State split a doubleheader at Regis University on Saturday, falling 11-8 before a 6-2 victory. The Roadrunners have won three of their past four games and are now 7-15 overall and 5-12 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Regis is 11-13 and 8-9.

Gibbons combined to go 5-for-7 with three runs batted in, two doubles, a home run and a stolen base in the two games. His two-run home run was part of a five-run first inning in Game Two, leading to the 6-2 win. Chris Spirek (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) also had an RBI single in the inning.

Leading 5-1 in the sixth, Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.)'s triple to lead off added an insurance run.

That was all Hand needed as he scattered nine hits over seven innings in his first career start. He gave up just single runs in the third and seventh innings.

The Roadrunners fell behind 11-3 in Game One, thanks to a seven-run third inning by the Rangers. MSU Denver got back in the game with five in the top of the fifth as Marcus Bean (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) and Gibbons each doubled during the rally. Nic Hansen (Monument, Colo./Palmer Ridge H.S.) pitched three innings of relief, allowing just two hits and on unearned run.

The two teams will play one game at noon on Sunday at Regis.
