Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Metro State was swept 10-3 and 2-1 at No. 20/13 Colorado Mesa on Saturday in a doubleheader in Grand Junction. The Roadrunners fell to 10-20 overall and 8-18 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CMU improved to 26-8 and 20-5.
The Roadrunners scored all three of their runs in the first game in the third inning, taking advantage of four walks, a hit batter and an error. Two of the runs scored on back-to-back bases-loaded walks to
Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) and
Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.). That frame gave Metro State a 3-0 lead, but the Mavericks scored twice in the bottom of the inning and eight over the final three innings.
Baldini,
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) combined for the team's three hits in the first game.
Kevin Hand (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) gave Metro State a strong start in the second game, holding the Mavericks off the board through four innings. He was touched for one run in the fifth and one more in the sixth, lasting 5.2 innings.
Unfortunately, the offense managed one hit through four innings and did not score until the seventh inning after a leadoff single by Baldini. Pinch runner
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) scored on a sacrifice fly by
Reilly Mau (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.).
The two teams will meet again on Saturday for one nine-inning game.
