Baseball: Clutch hits come up short in loss to Adams State

Box Score DENVER - Metro State left 14 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth innings as Adams State defeated the Roadrunners 6-3 at Auraria Field on Friday. The Roadrunners fell to 10-26 and ASU improved to 14-29.

A throwing error on what would have likely been a double play in the second inning cost the Roadrunners four unearned runs and that proved to be the difference. Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) allowed two earned runs in 4.1 innings and struck out three. Reliever Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) tossed 4.2 shutout innings, scattering four hits with two strikeouts.

Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) went 3-for-4 at the plate, leading the offense. Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.), Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.), Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) and Chris Spirek (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) each had two hits.

Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.)'s towering home run to left field gave the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

Down 6-1, they added single runs in the fifth and sixth. Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.) drove in Spirek in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, though MSU Denver left the bases loaded for the first time in the game. Spirek drove in Baldini with a double to left-center in the sixth.

The two teams will meet again for a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday at Auraria Field. Senior Day ceremonies will take place before the first game.
