Softball: Metro State falls out of first place after CSU-Pueblo earns sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. - Metro State dropped a doubleheader at Colorado State-Pueblo, falling 5-3 and 8-7 at Rawlings Sports Complex on Saturday to fall out of first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Roadrunners dropped to 25-13 overall and 19-10 in the RMAC, while CSU-Pueblo improved to 25-18 and 22-10. The ThunderWolves vaulted past three teams into first place with the wins, while MSU Denver slipped to fourth. Colorado Mesa has already completed its regular season and clinched a spot ahead of the Roadrunners in the RMAC. Two wins on Sunday could get Metro State back to second place in the conference and a No. 2 seed in the upcoming RMAC tournament.

Errors and late-inning rallies cost MSU Denver in both games as it committed three miscues in each game. In Game One, the Roadrunners gave up three runs in the bottom of the sixth as CSUP rallied for the win. In the second game, Metro State led 7-0 after the top of the third inning and lost in walk-off fashion after a three-run bottom of the seventh for the ThunderWolves.

Metro State overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first game to lead 3-2. Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) scored on a passed ball in the fourth and Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.) tied the game in the fifth with a run-scoring double. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Towner to take the lead.

Four straight batters reached base with two outs for CSUP in the sixth as they regained the lead for good with three runs.

A dropped flyball led to a three-run first inning in Game Two for Metro State. The Roadrunners scored four times in the third for a 7-0 lead after a three-run home run by Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.).

But the ThunderWolves scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning and three unearned runs in the fourth. They tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and then loaded the bases with two outs before Lacey Chesser provided a game-winning single throught the right side.

Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.), Brew and Dani Sandel (Omaha, Neb./Westside H.S.) each had two hits in the second game.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday. The Roadrunners could finish anywhere from second to sixth place in the RMAC, depending on the results of the rest of the games in the conference.
