Baseball: Bats heat up in second game of split with CCU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENVER - Metro State split a doubleheader against Colorado Christian University, losing Game One 3-2 and wrapping up the day with an 11-4 win on Saturday at Auraria Field. MSU Denver improved to 9-17 overall and 7-14 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU fell to 7-24 and 6-15.
 
Metro State tied the second game 1-1 in the third inning, when Reilly Mau (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) singled to center field, advancing Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.) to third base and sending Marcus Bean (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) home.
 
The Roadrunners went on to score eight runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-1 lead. Catcher Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.), who had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, started the inning off with a single to right-center, and then advanced to third off a double by right fielder Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.), then scored when shortstop Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) singled through the left side. Purvis then scored off an error. Designated hitter Marcus Bean (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) hit a home run to left field, sending Baldini and first baseman Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.) home. Scoring continued with left fielder Mau, Baca, who hit a home run to left field, and center fielder Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) all coming home to close out the inning.
 
Miller and Baldini scored in the fifth inning to put Metro State up 11-1, but CCU had three runners score in the sixth inning.
 
Metro State's Kevin Hand (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) pitched a winning six innings, allowing six hits and four runs.
 
Gibbons put the Roadrunners up 1-0 late in the fourth inning of the first game. CCU's third baseman Brandon Hesselberg and shortstop Caleb Barnard both scored in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Cougars pitcher Chisolm Witt scored the winning run in the sixth inning. Witt recorded the win for the Cougars, pitching six innings, allowing six hits and two runs. Although Baca scored in the sixth inning, the Roadrunners could not rally out a win.
 
Metro State will play a doubleheader against CCU Sunday beginning at noon at Auraria Field.
