Box Score CANYON, Texas - Metro State's season came to an end on Saturday on the second day of the NCAA tournament as the Roadrunners were eliminated after an 11-3 loss to hot-hitting Midwestern State (Texas) in five innings in Canyon, Texas. MSU Denver finished the year with a 33-17 record, while MWSU improved to 30-23.
The Mustangs won 14-13 against Texas Woman's University after Metro State fell 13-5 to No. 1 West Texas A&M on Saturday to set up the evening elimination game. The Roadrunners reached Saturday after a first-round win over Texas Woman's on Friday. Midwestern State Saturday's nightcap averaging 9.8 runs over its previous six games.
After
Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.) drove in
Dani Sandel (Omaha, Neb./Westside H.S.) with her 30th double of the season in the first inning, it was all Mustangs. Tillery's double brought her within one of the NCAA Division II single-season record.
MWSU pushed across three runs in the first, four in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth to finish the game.
Metro State tried to extend the game in the top of the fifth when Sandel's double to center with two outs drove in pinch runner
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) and
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.). Tillery then connected on her second hit of the game, a single to center, but the game ended when Sandel was thrown out at the plate.
The Roadrunners finished with seven hits in the game, including a pair each from Sandel, Tillery and Bakovich.
Metro State says goodbye to three seniors in Tillery, Sandel and
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.), who suffered the loss.
