Box Score 2 DENVER - Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) threw her first career no-hitter and the second this season for No. 18 Metropolitan State University of Denver as the Roadrunners blanked New Mexico Highlands 5-0 in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. The Roadrunners then lost 7-4 to Adams State in the second round. They will face Colorado Mesa at 12:15 p.m. on Friday in an elimination game from the double-elimination tournament.
Smith allowed just one walk and struck out five. She joins
Nicole Larsen (Murrieta, Calif./Bloomington H.S.) as Roadrunners to throw no-hitters this season.
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) drove in four of the team's five runs, going 2-for-3 with a home run.
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) also finished 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
A two-out single by Brew in the fourth inning scored Towner and
Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) for the game's first runs.
A leadoff single in the fifth by
Britney Thomas (Cheyenne, Wyo./East H.S.) led to a 3-0 lead after five innings. Brew added a two-run home run in the sixth for the game's final runs.
Against ASU, the Roadrunners fell behind 7-1 after four innings and could not recover. Towner was 2-for-4 with a home run.
Amanda Taney (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) also had two hits.
