Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Kris Lalk (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) pitched a complete-game shutout as Metropolitan State University of Denver upset No. 16/15 Colorado State-Pueblo 8-0 on Thursday in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Roadrunners will face the winner of No. 3/2 Colorado Mesa and Adams State in the second round at 3:30 p.m. on Friday after improving to 27-20 this season.
It was the first win at the RMAC Tournament for the Roadrunners since 2009 and the first win over a nationally-ranked opponent at the RMAC Tournament since defeating No. 15 Colorado Mesa 7-5 in 2007.
Lalk was brilliant all afternoon, scattering five singles. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) led off the third inning with a single and scored with two outs on a base hit by
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.).
Thurston drove in the second run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) delivered a one-out RBI single in the eighth to score
Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.).
In the ninth,
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) hit an RBI single with the bases loaded and Gibbons followed with a grand slam.
Gibbons, Comito and
Marcus Bean (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) each finished with three hits. It was the second time in the past three games Gibbons has driven in five runs.
