Box Score 2 La Jolla, Calif. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team fell to Western Oregon and UC San Diego on Friday in the team's first two games of the season.
The Roadrunners were defeated in the season opener by Western Oregon by a score of 8-6. MSU Denver was able to build a 6-0 lead following a double by freshman
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) that scored sophomore
Harley Huser (Thornton, Colo./Mountain Range H.S.) in the top of the third inning. Junior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) would go 1-for-3 and drive in two runs. Leadoff hitter, junior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) went 3-for-3 in the game scoring two runs and also reaching base on a walk. Junior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) also scored two runs in the game. MSU Denver would give up eight unanswered runs to Western Oregon over the final four innings.
Smith started the game in the circle for the Roadrunners and allowed six run, four earned, on six hits. She also posted two strikeouts and received no decision in the game. Senior
Kailey Christensen (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork H.S.) gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits and received the loss.
In the second game of the day, MSU Denver would fall 7-2 to UC San Diego. Sophomore
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) would represent the Roadrunners offense driving in the Huser with a two-run homerun in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 2-2. UC San Diego would be too much for MSU Denver as Fields would go all six innings giving up seven runs on 13 hits.
MSU Denver will return to action on Saturday to face Western Oregon and UC San Diego again. The Roadrunners will face UC San Diego at 10 a.m. PT and Western Oregon at 3 p.m. PT in La Jolla, Calif.
