Box Score Golden, Colo. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball fell to Colorado School of Mines 11-10 in extra innings in the second game of their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on Saturday, April 23. The Roadrunners drop to 14-20 overall and 10-14 in the RMAC.
As they did the day before, MSU Denver jumped out to an early lead scoring four runs in the top of the 1
st inning, highlighted by a three-run shot by sophomore
Cale O'Donnell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.). O'Donnell has now hit a home run in three of his last four games. The Roadrunners added to the lead in the 2
nd, stringing together hits to plate three more to make the score 7-0.
The Orediggers again battled back, taking advantage of a two-out error by
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) that would have had senior starter
Cameron Stroup (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) out of the inning scoreless but kept the inning alive. Mines would cut the lead to 7-6 by the end of the 3
rd. However, the Roadrunners kept the hit parade going to tack on an additional two runs in the top of the 4
th stemming from three-straight singles to begin the inning going up 9-6.
Freshman
Hunter Hogoboom (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) came on in relief to maintain the lead while pitching four scoreless innings until Mines was able to tie the game 9-9 off a Nate Olinger three-run home run in the bottom of the 8
th. After both teams went scoreless in the 9
th, the game headed to extras.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the 10
th,
Jake Ekman (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) was able to reach on a Mines error to put MSU Denver up 10-9. The Roadrunner were haunted by yet another Thurston two-out error which would've ended the game, but Mines went on to double two batters later to give them the 11-10 victory.
MSU Denver concludes their 11-game road trip tomorrow and series against Mines at 12 noon at Jim Darden Field in Golden. The Roadrunners will then conclude their home schedule at the Regency Athletic Complex on April 29- May 1 against national power Colorado Mesa.
