Denver- Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball starting pitcher Julian Garcia (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) was drafted in the 10th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, June 10.

The Fort Collins, Colo. native was selected with the 287th overall pick in this year's draft by the Phillies, coming off a school record 95 strikeouts in his sophomore season. Garcia was selected first team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2016, while earning the RMAC Pitcher of the Week Award four seperate occasions throughout the season.

"We are proud of Julian. Since he joined our program he has been a first class kid with an amazing work ethic on the field" said baseball head coach Jerrid Oates. "He has worked extremely hard to get to this point in his career. We know he will do great things at the next level."

With the 10th round selection, Garcia becomes the highest MLB Draft pick in school history. Former pitcher Todd Goergen had previously set the mark in 1988, who was also drafted by the Phillies in the 20th round.
