Box Score San Antonio, Texas – The Metropolitan State University of Denver fell to No. 10 St. Mary's 5-2 to finish second in the Rattler Invitational.
The Roadrunners fell behind early in the contest giving up an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning and another unearned run in the bottom of the second. The score would remain 2-0 in favor of St. Mary's through five innings.
MSU Denver was able to score in the top of the sixth inning. Senior
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) reached on a single and then was able to steal second. Junior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) hit a double to left field to drive in Bakovich. After freshman
Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) pinch ran for Espinoza, junior
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) hit a single to score Sansburn. The game was tied 2-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning.
St. Mary's scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the 5-2 lead. MSU Denver was unable to have reach base in the top of the seventh inning.
Senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) took the loss in the contest for MSU Denver. Smith allowed seven hits in the game. She also gave up three runs, all unearned.
Three Roadrunners were named to the all-tournament team. Smith and Espinoza were name to the all-tournament team as well as senior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.).
The Roadrunners completed non-conference play with an overall record of 6-7.
MSU Denver will return to action on Saturday, February 25 for a doubleheader against CSU-Pueblo to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at The Regency Athletic Complex beginning at 12 noon.
