Softball: Roadrunners Split On Opening Day

Roadrunners defeat Nebraska-Kearney and fall to Colorado Mesa

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Denver - The Metropolitan State University of Denver's softball team started its opening weekend defeating Nebraska-Kearney and falling to Colorado Mesa at home on Saturday.

In the first game, MSU Denver defeated Nebraska-Kearney 9-3.  Freshman pitcher Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) gave up three runs in the first inning.  With the bases loaded, Molly Stern singled to right field allowing Taylre Keenan to score the first run for the Lopers. Emilee Jonas singled bringing Stern and Meg Householder home making the score 3-0 after the top-half of the inning..

The Roadrunners found theri rythm in the fourth inning as Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) hit a triple. Terry was followed by freshman Tes Haas hitting another triple scoring Terry for the first run of the day for MSU Denver.  Sophomore Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) singled bringing Haas home and then Lovas then proceeded to steal second base.  Senior Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) tallied a hit and landed on second base as Lovas was thrown out in a close play at home.  Senior Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) singled allowing Bakovich to score and tying the game.

MSU Denver kept the offense going in the fifth inning where the team scored two more runs.  Lovas hit a doune to left-center field scoring both Haas and freshman Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ), who was pinch running for Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge).

The Roadrunners closed out the game in the sixth inning scoring four runs. With Peters and senior Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) on base, Terry tripled driving in both Anderson and Peters. Haas then tripled bringing Terry home to score. Lovas singled to the shortstop driving in Haas.

Haas led the Roadrunners in scoring with three runs.  She was closely followed by Terry with two runs.  Lovas tallied four RBIs in the game.  Haas and Terry each ahd two two RBIs in the contest. Though McGhee had a rocky first inning, she only allowed three runs on seven hits in her first start for MSU Denver.

MSU Denver faced Colorado Mesa in the second game of the day where the Roadrunners fell 10-1.  The Mavricks out swinging scoring two runs in the first inning.  In the third inning the Mavricks were up 4-0 when Kellie Mrofcza hit a home run with one on base bringing the score to 6-0 in favor of Colorado Mesa.  The fourth inning saw Colorado Mesa's Kaila Jacobi hit a grand slam making the score to 10-0.

MSU Denver continued to play throughout the game.  Bakovich doubled to centerfield in the fifth inning bringing Lovas home to score.  Unfortuately, that would be the only run in the game for MSU Denver as the fifth inning ended with the bases loaded.

The Mavricks out-hit the Roadrunners 12-4 in the game.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Sunday, February 5 at 10 a.m. where they will face Nebraska-Kearney at the Regency Athletic Complex.  They will also face Colorado Mesa at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
