Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, Utah – The MSU Denver women's tennis team earned a narrow 4-3 dual victory Sunday over Western New Mexico at the Trailblazer Invitational hosted by Dixie State.
The Roadrunners' men dropped a 6-1 decision to Western New Mexico at the same event.
"The exciting part about the women is that I don't think we played our best today but we came away with the win," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "Doubles really set the tone today, and we managed to hold onto the lead in singles. Great job by 'Tabi' for grabbing the clinch match."
Tabitha Porter beat Julia Tozzi 6-4, 7-6 in the No. 1 singles matchup for the deciding victory.
The Roadrunners showed their depth in singles as
Olivia Kaiser won her matchup at No. 5 over Julia Terrazas 6-2, 6-1 and
Mackenzie Hotan defeated Nicold Gonzalez 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
MSU Denver won two of the three doubles matches to earn the other team point, as Porter teamed with
Eliza McKean to win at No. 2, while
Alex Pessoa and
Ainsley Winterrowd won the No. 3 match – both of those wins were by scores of 6-1.
In the men's dual,
Mateo Besada picked up MSU Denver's only singles victory with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Oscar Serra at No. 4. In doubles,
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla teamed up with
David Kijak for a win in the No. 2 slot, but Western New Mexico picked up the doubles point with two wins.
Joey Tscherne, one of the Roadrunners' top performers, was ill and didn't complete. MSU Denver had one open spot in its singles lineup as well as in one of its doubles spots.
"The guys struggled with some fundamentals today, which is really disappointing," Graetz said. "Credit to Western New Mexico as it deserved to win. The great thing about this guys team is how resilient it is, and I know it will bounce back quickly."
The men's team also played an unofficial scrimmage with Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Colorado Mesa.
The women's team's scheduled dual match with Stanislaus State (Calif.) was cancelled due to rain.
The women are scheduled to wrap up their stay in Utah on Monday, with a 9 a.m. dual against host Dixie State.
