@RoadrunnerSB: Sansburn Heating Up for Roadrunners

MSU Denver plays Tuesday at Division I Northern Colorado

DENVER – Just like last year, Megan Sansburn (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge) is heating up down the stretch.

Sansburn, who added 95 points to her batting average after March 10 last season to finish at .328, has jumped her batting average by 68 points since March 10 this year.

Heading into Tuesday's 5 p.m. single-game non-conference matchup at Division I Northern Colorado, Sansburn is batting .310, the fourth-best average on the team. She's also tied for fourth with 16 RBIs.

"I feel good at the plate," Sansburn said. "I was struggling early in the season. I'm feeling more confident than I did. It's really coming together. I just want to keep it up for my team and do what I can, do my part."

This past weekend, during two-game splits with both Dixie State and Black Hills State, Sansburn was 6-for-13 with two doubles and five RBIs.

She drove in two runs with a single during a game-deciding, seven-run sixth-inning in an 8-5 win over Black Hills State, tied the game with an RBI single to start a three-run fifth in a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Dixie State, and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in a 6-4 loss to Black Hills State.

She's 9-for-19 (.474) at the plate over her last six games. She jumped from No. 9 in the batting order to No. 2 after going 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs in the first game of that stretch.

"We've gotten the feeling that it's starting to click for her, like it did last year," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "You could see it's coming more consistently. She's given us consistent at-bats. At the beginning of the year, that was the expectation. We know what she can do.

"She's not big in stature and she's kind of unassuming, but she's got some pop in her bat, and she's someone who can run – when she gets on base you can make some things happen. So it's nice to see that coming. We need that, a returning player to get back in her groove."

The Roadrunners (19-21) will be looking to get back into their groove after a disappointing end to the weekend with a home loss to Black Hills State. It could potentially start Tuesday at Gloria Rodriguez Field against Northern Colorado. The Bears are 9-28 on the season, but they are coming off a three-game home sweep of Idaho State.

"I'm confident in saying it's not too much different from what we've seen all year in our Division II schedule," Van Wetzinga said. "The expectation is to go up there and compete and try to get better."

MSU Denver and Northern Colorado haven't played in softball since splitting a 2015 doubleheader.

"You'll probably see all four of our pitchers," Van Wetzinga said. "There's no reason to put a lot of pitches on someone. And we have four pitches with very different looks, so we can stagger them."

The Roadrunners (14-10 for fifth place in the league) return to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action this weekend, with doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Fort Lewis (13-28, 8-20 for 10th place).
