DENVER – It was three years ago today, Oct. 31, 2017, that goalkeeper Alessandro Gentile, who hadn't played all season, entered the game with 42 seconds left in the second overtime as the MSU Denver men's soccer team prepared for a penalty-kick shootout, and then Gentile made a save in the shootout while the Roadrunners made all five of their attempts to advance to the RMAC Tournament semifinals with 0-0 (5-3 PKs) result against UCCS.

That performance highlights our latest installment of "On This Date in Roadrunners History," which looks back at the biggest accomplishments in MSU Denver athletics on that particular calendar day.

For now, though, this will be our last installment of On This Date, as the series is placed on hold as we prepare to return to the playing courts and fields on a nearly full-time basis by the end of November.

Compiling MSU Denver's daily records has been a labor of love, but it is also a tremendously time-intensive exercise. So many amazing moments in the program's history have been filed away – literally – in folders, while others are in seldom visited locations on roadrunnersathletics.com. It has been an at times amazing process to uncover, reveal and re-live those moments that will hopefully never be forgotten.

From when collegiate sports were shut down in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, until the somewhat fuller re-opening by the end of November, we've revisited about 4 ½ months worth of On This Dates.

There are about 4 ½ months left to go, a project that hopefully can be completed in much more normal circumstances.

There are so many more moments to be celebrated – the month of November alone is a veritable championship month with regular-season and conference-tournament titles, and so many NCAA Tournament victories, including two national championships in women's soccer.

We hope this project can be completed soon, and we hope you've enjoyed what you've read so far!

2019 – Michaela Smith had 15 kills, Summer Greager had 12 kills on .400 hitting, and Brandi Torr had five service aces as the MSU Denver volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-15, 25-18) over Chadron State to improve to 16-9 overall and 12-3 in the RMAC.
 
2014 – Tess Hagenlock scored at 97:29 as the No. 8 MSU Denver women's soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit, tying the game on a Noemy Polanco goal at 30:22, and won 2-1 in overtime against Western Colorado. Abby Rolph had an assist on each goal for the Roadrunners, who improved to 13-1-4 overall and 10-0-4 in the RMAC in the regular-season finale.
 
2014 – Abbie Noland had 10 kills as No. 20 MSU Denver cruised to a 3-0 win (25-15, 25-22, 25-18) while holding Black Hills State to .000 hitting (27 kills, 27 errors). The Roadrunners improved to 20-3 overall and 14-1 in the RMAC.
 
2012 – Marc Herschberger scored twice in the first 4:38 of the second half to tie it, then Pierce Galan scored the game-winner at 71:48 as the MSU Denver men's soccer team came from behind to win 3-2 against Fort Lewis in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals. Danny Arrubla and Brenden Hughes each had two assists for the Roadrunners, who improved to 12-6-1.
 
2012 – Karisa Price had a goal and an assist as the MSU Denver women's soccer team scored twice in the final 34 minutes and won 2-0 against Colorado Mesa in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals, improving to 13-4-2.
 
2010 – Steven Emory scored two goals and Walter Bertini had a goal and an assist as the No. 23 MSU Denver men's soccer team won 4-1 at CSU-Pueblo, to finish the regular season at 11-5-2 overall and 8-4-2 in the RMAC.
 
2009 – Bri Morley had 16 kills on .433 hitting, Emily Greenhalgh had 13 kills, Lisa Jones had 10 kills on .615 hitting, and Gabrielle Curtis set 40 assists as the No. 22 MSU Denver volleyball team hit .361 and beat Colorado School of Mines 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-19) to improve to 18-7 overall and 11-5 in the RMAC.
 
2008 – Jen Thomas had a goal and an assist as the No. 12 MSU Denver women's soccer team scored twice in the final 27 minutes to win 2-0 at Fort Lewis. The Roadrunners improved to 14-1-3 overall and 10-0-2 in the RMAC.
 
2008 – Bri Morley had 13 kills, Amanda Cook added 12 kills and 14 digs, and Lisa Jones had 11 kills on .444 hitting as the MSU Denver volleyball team defeated UCCS 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19) to improve to 13-3 in the RMAC.
 
2004 – Kylee Hanavan had two goals and two assists, and Ymara Guante added two goals and an assist, as the eventual national champion MSU Denver women's soccer team won 6-0 at CSU-Pueblo, improving to 19-1 overall and 14-0 in the RMAC. In league play, the Roadrunners upped their streaks to 42 games without a loss and 31 straight wins.
 
2003 – Naomi Clarke scored at 3:59 and Mandy Allen had three saves as the MSU Denver women's soccer team won 1-0 at New Mexico Highlands, improving to 17-0-1 overall and 12-0 in the RMAC. The Roadrunners' RMAC streaks grew to 26 games without a loss and 15 straight wins.
 
2003 – Shawna Gilbert had 14 kills on .737 hitting (no errors, 19 attacks), and Devon Herron set 43 assists, as the No. 2 MSU Denver volleyball team hit .346 in a 3-0 win (30-18, 30-21, 30-16) at Colorado School of Mines to improve to 21-5 overall and 15-1 in the RMAC.
 
2000 – Tony Thomas and Dominic Duran each had a goal and an assist as the MSU Denver men's soccer team won 3-1 at Colorado Christian in the regular-season finale for its third straight victory, improving to 14-3-1 overall and 9-3 in the RMAC.
 
1999 – Janice Armstrong scored the tying goal at 48:15 and the MSU Denver women's soccer team got the game-winner on an own goal at 96:23 to win 2-1 in overtime at Fort Lewis in the regular-season finale. The Roadrunners improved to 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the RMAC.
 
1997 – Shannon Ortell had 15 kills and hit .313 as the MSU Denver volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win 15-10, 15-4, 15-9) at Chadron State to improve to 21-7 overall and 14-3 in the RMAC.
 
1996 – Stacey Hoyt had 12 kills as the No. 11 MSU Denver volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win (15-8, 15-4, 15-4) at Chadron State.
 
*1993 – Crissy Canada hit an MSU Denver volleyball program record (minimum 15 attacks) .875 with 14 kills and no errors in 16 swings, in a 3-0 win (15-7, 15-10, 16-14) against No. 10 Florida Southern. Wynema Hunter had 12 kills on .647 hitting while adding eight blocks (two solo) and Lora Houdek set 43 assists as the No. 4 Roadrunners hit .353 improved to 26-3. They dropped fell 3-2 (0-15, 15-13, 14-16, 15-9, 15-11) to No. 6 Northern Colorado later in the Air Force Premier championship match, despite 27 kills from Tracy Thompson, 24 kills by Chelsea Terrell and 20 kills by Canada.
 
1992 – Jennifer Duran scored the game's only goal at 45:08 as the MSU Denver women's soccer team won 1-0 at Denver in the season finale. The Roadrunners finished the season 5-1-2 in the Colorado Athletic Conference.
 
*1990 – Bridgette Leisure scored the still-standing MSU Denver women's soccer program record of five goals, and she added an assist for a program-record 11 points, in a 6-1 victory over Regis in the Colorado Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals.
 
1990 – Dana Stright had 10 kills on .526 hitting as the MSU Denver volleyball team won 3-0 against Air Force (17-15, 15-8, 16-14) to improve to 8-3 in the Colorado Athletic Conference.
 
1989 – Nancy Kogle had 12 kills on .440 hitting and added six blocks (two solo) as the No. 13 MSU Denver volleyball team defeated Colorado College 3-0 (15-10, 15-5, 15-8), improving to 31-9.
 
1984 – The MSU Denver volleyball team won at Regis 3-2 (15-9, 9-15, 8-15, 15-8, 15-12).
 
1978 – The MSU Denver volleyball team that opened the season 36-0 and reached the AIAW Elite Eight won 3-0 at Colorado Women's to improve to 23-0.
 
1974 – The MSU Denver men's soccer team that eventually won an NAIA district championship won 4-1 at Denver.
