DENVER – MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain has announced the recent additions of
Evan Marzilli and Daniel Medina as volunteer assistant coaches for the baseball program.
Marzilli, an outfielder, played for South Carolina's back-to-back College World Series champions in 2010 and 2011, earning all-tournament recognition in 2011. After three years with the Gamecocks, in which he hit .302 with eight homers, 75 RBIs and 27 stolen bases, he was an eighth-round draft pick in 2012 by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
He played eight seasons in the Diamondbacks organization as well playing briefly in the Chicago Cubs organization, and he spent parts of five seasons in Class AAA. He compiled a career minor-league average of .252 and had 23 homers and 80 stolen bases in 697 games. He was named the top defensive outfielder in the Diamondbacks' minor league organization for three consecutive seasons by Baseball America magazine. He also played independent professional baseball in 2019 and 2020.
Marzilli has coaching experience working for the Arizona Diamondbacks Youth Program as the hitting and fielding coach (2015-17), and coaching for Gameday Inc., One Six Performance at the University of South Carolina (2010-20).
Medina currently owns and operates Play Ball!, a baseball and softball indoor facility, located in Lakewood, Colo.
Medina has been the head coach at Chatfield High School in Littleton, Colo., and has taken his team to postseason play each of the first two full seasons he's coached while compiling an overall record of 29-17. He was named the Jeffco League Coach of the Year in 2018. He was the head coach at Colorado Academy (2011-13), Jefferson High School (2005-10) and was an assistant coach at Lutheran High School in Parker, Colo. (2014-15),
Medina has also coached in the Colorado Khaos and USA Prime Baseball organizations, and he has coached multiple other teams and at many local summer youth camps and clinics in previous years.
Medina pitched collegiately at Arapahoe Community College in 2002 and 2003 and at CSU-Pueblo.
He and wife Nicole have three children: Daniel, Andrew and Rachel.
