COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Not only did
Riley Negrey become one of the first two MSU Denver women to compete in the pentathlon, she also set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles while doing so.
Negrey ran the hurdles – one of the pentathlon's five events – in 9.78 seconds on Friday at UCCS' Pre-Holiday Invitational & Multi, eclipsing teammate
Summer Jarolmen's record of 9.81.
Eventually
Jocelyn Korbe finished 10th in the pentathlon with 3,037 points, while Negrey was 12th with 2,545 in the Roadrunners' initial foray into multi-event participation.
"Riley and Jocelyn did a great job in the pent today," MSU Denver coach
Janis Christopher said. "Many of the events they competed in were brand-new to them so they were really doing a lot of learning. They had such a positive attitude throughout the day. It's inspiring to see hard work pay off."
Also Friday,
Kamryn Scott placed 10th in the women's 200 in 26.82 seconds for an indoor personal best and
Jaivion Lattimore was just off her school record 60 time of 7.81 while sprinting to 7.89 in a strong field.
In the 60 hurdles, both Jarolmen and freshman Taylor Sipon qualified for the finals.
"The team had a really good day, overall," Christopher said. "Many had personal best indoor performances and those who didn't were very close. Most importantly, they did a really good job supporting one another. It's always easier to have a good performance when you feel supported in your efforts."
The pentathlon is a five-event discipline that, in addition to the 60 hurdles, includes the high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 meters.
Never before had MSU Denver had a competitor in the pentathlon – or for that matter in the high jump or shot put indoors -- so both Negrey and Korbe now share the indoor high jump school record of 1.43 meters (4 feet, 8 ¼ inches), as Korbe's shot put of 9.34 meters (30-7 ¾) is also a school record.
