GUNNISON, Colo. — The MSU Denver men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened action at the RMAC Track and Field Championships on Friday with a record-breaking performance, a podium finish and multiple event finals secured heading into the meet's final day.
Odone Omofoma delivered the headline moment of the day for the Roadrunners in the women's 60 meters prelims. She blazed to a school-record time of 7.66 seconds in the prelims, finishing sixth overall in a 20-runner field while automatically advancing to Saturday's final. Omofoma's mark resets the program standard and positions her as a key contender when medals are decided. Teammate Raegan Moran also competed in the prelims, clocking a 7.86.
Kathryn Rust put together a steady and versatile performance across five events to earn a third-place finish in the women's pentathlon with 3,227 points, securing a podium spot for MSU Denver on day one of the championships.
Rust was particularly strong in the hurdles and field events. She placed second overall in the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles (8.84), high jump (1.61m) and shot put (11.39m), providing the bulk of her scoring output. She added a mark of 4.69m in the long jump and closed the competition with the 800 meters.
Rust also doubled back later in the day to qualify fourth overall in the open women's 60-meter hurdles prelims (8.84), advancing to the final and giving herself another scoring opportunity Saturday.
Kenny Greene was dominant on the track, sweeping the preliminaries in both of his events. Greene posted the fastest time in the men's 200 meters at 21.64 and returned to take the top qualifying spot in the men's 400 meters at 48.52. He will enter both finals as the runner to beat as the Roadrunners look to stack points on the final day.
In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Anthony Martinez led a quartet of Roadrunners with a fourth-place prelim time of 8.19 to advance. Aden Guenther (8.31), Sean Pecenka (8.33) and Brandon Aviles (8.42) also represented MSU Denver in a deep field.
Joseph Barlow delivered a strong showing in the men's long jump, placing fifth overall with a leap of 6.99 meters to secure valuable team points.
In the women's shot put, Raziah Hyslop recorded a throw of 11.61 meters, while Constance O'Neal competed in the women's 5,000 meters, finishing in 19:02.58.
Both distance medley relay squads were also in action. The men's 4,000-meter DMR team of Eisen Dacus, Jacob Simpson, Elijah Garcia and Darren Hayden placed eighth in 10:32.66, while the women's quartet of Avanti Wadhwa, Jessica Hobson, Peyton Meier and Ellie Shaw took seventh in 13:02.17.
Arianna Toaipa added a seventh-place prelim finish in the women's 400 meters (58.45), keeping MSU Denver in the mix across sprint events.
With a school record, a bronze-medal performance and multiple top qualifiers in place, the Roadrunners head into the final day of competition in Gunnison poised to make a strong push in the team standings as the RMAC Championships conclude Saturday.
