Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M. – MSU Denver swept a doubleheader and a four-game series from New Mexcio Highlands on Sunday, picking up victories of 6-4 and 10-3 to even its record at 4-4.
Down 3-0 after two innings in the opening game, MSU Denver rallied for four runs in the third inning, with a two-run double by
Darby McGhee putting the Roadrunners ahead to stay. Three walks set the table.
"Today wasn't pretty softball and we weren't sharp but we got what we came down here for," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said.
McGhee played a large role in this game on both ends as a pitcher and hitter. She pitched five innings, allowing only two earned runs and a walk. McGhee had one hit, but she had crucial at-bats that lead to RBIs, finishing with three.
"We gave them a lot of opportunities but we did a nice job of limiting the damage," Van Wetzinga said.
In the second game. the Roadrunners pulled away for the victory as eight different batters had at least one hit.
The Roadrunners scored four in the fifth inning was where MSU Denver broke out, scoring four runs. It was a steady team effort throughout, caused by a combination of clutch at-bats from MSU Denver and terrors by NM Highlands.
The Roadrunners had 10 hits, including a homer by
Haley Doughty, while overcoming five errors.
"We need to continue to get better and be more consistentm, but at the end of the day it was great for the team to get back on the field and play," Van Wetzinga said.
Strong pitching performances by
Kayla Banks (3 2/3 innings, one earned run) and
Destinee Lopez (3 1/3 innings no runs) kept the Roadrunners at a safe margin.
