@RoadrunnerSB: Big Innings Propel Roadrunners

MSU Denver's pitching and defense keep it close before offensive outbursts

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENVER – MSU Denver got a big inning in each game to propel itself to a doubleheader sweep of Fort Lewis on Saturday, winning 9-1 and 5-1.

The first game was shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule.

"We've been playing pretty clean and sharp softball lately," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "I hope that can continue. We've definitely grown as a team throughout the season."

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the third of the opener, the Roadrunners (20-8 overall, 18-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) struck for eight runs.

Olivia Dampier tied it with an RBI single, then doubles by Megan Sansburn and Rebecca Gonzales produced a total of three runs and Ari Valdez made it 5-1 with an RBI triple. Then Darby McGhee and Kami Grammerstorf hit back-to-back homers to cap the outburst.

McGhee (11-3) got the win after allowing one run on three hits while pitching four innings.

In the second game, Shelby Robb broke up a no-hit bid with an RBI single to put the Roadrunners ahead in the fourth inning, then capped a four-run fifth inning with a two-run homer that made it 5-1.

Destinee Lopez (8-2) made the lead stand up, though she did need last-out relief help after allowing one run on five hits while walking four and striking out seven in 6 2/3 innings. McGhee picked up the save, coming on to get a fly out that left the bases loaded.

"Our pitching and defense was really solid today," Van Wetzinga said. "Our offense was a little slow getting started in game two, so it was good to have our defense and pitching step up until our bats got going."

Robb was 4-for-5 for the day as the true freshman pushed her batting average up to .524 (44-for-84), with six homers and 29 RBIs. Grammerstorf, another true freshman, is batting .414 in 29 at-bats after going 3-for-3.

"Our hitters adjusted and showed good discipline at the plate," Van Wetzinga said. "They didn't chase pitches and jumped on quality strikes."
