DENVER – After a slightly disappointing start to the season, the MSU Denver women's golf team is looking to get back on track this week at a familiar and friendly facility.
The Roadrunners play Monday and Tuesday at the RJGA Shootout at Estrella on the Estrella Golf Club Course in Goodyear, Ariz.
"I'm excited to see us on a course that they know and have liked in the past," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said.
When the Roadrunners last played this course in 2019,
Sydney Eye shot a first-round 77 and
Winnie Shaw had a first-round 78 as both finished among the top 51 in the huge field.
MSU Denver opened this season Sept. 13 and 14 at the Swan Memorial and finished 14
th among 19 teams.
"We seemed really nervous and made some mental mistakes that you would hope they wouldn't," Ferguson said. "There was a lot of tentative play. We should be better and more comfortable this week.
"We've played this course a couple of times, and it's similar to where we practice in terms of the size of the fairways and greens. It's a good, fair golf course."
Shaw led the way in the season opener with a three-round score of 26-over-par 242, with Eye shooting 247 and
Isabel Botero 258. The Roadrunners will also welcome
Antonella Blanco for her season debut this week.
"From what we've seen in practice, she looks really good so far," Ferguson said.
With a rough start behind them and a full lineup in place, the Roadrunners are expecting better results.
"We have a lot of potential," Ferguson said. "We have four players who can shoot in the 70s, and that's more than we've had in the past. I'm excited to see them play once they get their confidence up and get going."
