DENVER – The MSU Denver women's basketball team has a chance in the NCAA Tournament to catch the one that got away.
The field for the eight-team Division II South Central Regional was revealed Sunday night and the fifth-seeded Roadrunners have been matched up with fourth-seeded Texas Woman's for a first-round game in Canyon, Texas, on Friday.
In its second game of the season, MSU Denver played at Texas Woman's and lost 86-84 – in a school-record three-overtime game.
"It is nice to have a little bit of familiarity," MSU Denver coach
Tanya Haave said. "They're probably different in how they play, and we are, too. There's been a whole season of growth. I'm anxious to watch some film on them.
"I think it's a good matchup. They are an outstanding team."
MSU Denver is 22-8, while Texas Woman's – knocked off in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Tournament – is 19-8.
MSU Denver played the first time against Texas Woman's without forward
Morgan Griego, who was the most valuable player of last week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament, and had a stunning six players foul out against Texas Woman's as the Roadrunners were whistled for 38 fouls (to 22 for Texas Woman's) despite playing with the lead for much of all three overtimes.
"Even having all those players foul out and the loss of momentum, we were still right in the game," guard
Alex Carlton said. "So we still have a great opportunity, and we're going to get after it. I'm excited to play them again."
West Texas A&M, which won the Lone Star Conference Tournament, will serve as the tournament host. Lone Star Conference teams received the top four seeds for the regional.
MSU Denver (22-8) won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament and secured the highest seed of any of the four RMAC teams in the field.
"The main thing is, we're still playing," Haave said. "And at this point, you don't really care who you play."
