Box Score 2 ALAMOSA, Colo. – MSU Denver's prolific offense set another scoring record in the opener, then went on to complete a doubleheader sweep on Friday, defeating Adams State 25-11 and 7-3.
"They saved their best pitcher for the third game (of the series), and he's good, no doubt, and he pitched well," MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain said. "He's got five of their six wins, a lot of complete games, and teams aren't hitting great off him. It was a challenge for us to be ready to go after scoring 46 in the first two games."
The 25-run lidlifter (which came in a seven-inning game no less) followed a 21-run performance in Thursday's series-opening victory. Scoring 46 runs in back-to-back games is a program record, breaking the mark of 43 set in 1987 and tied in 2010. The Roadrunners scored 20 runs or more in back-to-back games for the first time since scoring an even 20 against Colorado Christian in both games of an April 19, 2010, doubleheader.
In the opener, after getting three in the first inning, MSU Denver hit the 7-7-7 jackpot in the next three innings, making it 24-8 after 3 ½ innings.
Bill Ralston was 4-for-5 and scored three runs,
Caleb Albaugh was 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs,
Cam Yuran was 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs,
Colin Stone was 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs,
Tanner Garner was 3-for-5 with three RBIs,
Chase Anderson was 3-for-5,
Ross Smith was 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs and
Cody Schultz was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
The Roadrunners' 24 hits matched a season high. Ten of the hits were for extra bases.
In the second game, MSU Denver (26-15 overall, 15-8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) led 2-1 through four innings before starting to break it open with two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Albaugh was 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, Schultz was 2-for-3, and Ralston was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Through the first three games of the series, Ralston is 8-for-15 with 10 RBIs.
"He's hit some balls hard," Strain said. "He's always a force in the middle of the lineup, and when he's up with guy on base, we feel good about it. It's good to see him take advantage the opportunities."
Albaugh is 7-for-12 with two homers and six RBIs after homering in both games Friday.
"He's swung it well all season, and maybe he had some more homers last year," Strain said. "It's nice to see him able to trot around the bases a bit."
Leading 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh, MSU Denver surrendered a two-run homer before closer
Eric Cox entered in a non-save situation to get the final three outs – two of them by strikeout.
Starter
Andrew Hayes dodged danger in four ultimately effective innings for the victory,
Carter Akerfelds got the win with two innings of relief ahead of Cox.
"Hayes threw really well, and we had our best-pitched game of the series when we needed it the most," Strain said. "I'm happy for him. He got out of some jams and made a lot of quality pitches. He had some tough walks, because he was around the zone and wasn't getting much on the corners."
The series concludes with a noon single game on Sunday.
