@MSUDenverBSB: Akerfelds' Gem Lifts Roadrunners into Championship Game

MSU Denver plays host Colorado Mesa for title

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Carter Akerfelds turned in the best performance of his career when MSU Denver needed it most, turning in a complete game effort Saturday for a 13-3 win over UCCS to move the Roadrunners into the RMAC Tournament championship game.

The Roadrunners play top-seeded tournament host and national Nos. 10 and 14 Colorado Mesa in the winner-take-all-championship game later Saturday.

Akerfelds (2-3) scattered 11 hits while walking one and striking out a career-high eight in a 134-pitch effort. The senior right-hander surrendered two second-inning runs and another in the eighth.

"He was awesome," MSU Denver coach Ryan Strain said. "He was banged up, got hurt the first weekend of the season and rehabbed for six or seven weeks and then built himself up for this. And we really needed it. I'm very happy for him that he was able to do that."

Meanwhile, Ross Smith, Colin Stone, Caleb Albaugh and Tanner Garner all hit homers as MSU Denver improved to 34-20.

Smith, Garner and Stone all had three hits and three RBIs.
